Hyperbolic Plantation

Currently, on display in the 2017 Summer Juried Exhibition at the AVA Gallery in Lebanon NH are two works by Banwell team member Tim Olson.

The pieces are geometrically-inspired wall-hung sculptures generated by marrying digital design tools with traditional “analog” construction techniques.

The work illustrated here creates a  hyperbolic shape by exploiting a common constraint in the field of architecture and design: the standardized dimensions of raw materials. The sculpture was conceived by dividing a standard length component at prescribed indices. Distributing both sides of each division in a particular way on a regular grid yields the hyperbolic figure implied by the ends of the segments in the array. A visual scripting algorithm was utilized to generate the form and to export the data necessary for fabrication. The work is made of hard maple. You can see this piece in person alongside works of over 80 other artists at the AVA gallery. The show will be open until August 23rd, 2017.
