Unfortunately, it’s far too common for a job to be “just a job”… I, like most Architects, find myself in a fortunate position to do something that I truly love to do. I have to admit to smiling a little bit when my wife calls up and asks what I’m up to… That little grumble that I hear when I say “I’m coloring!” reminds me about how lucky I am.
My position as an Architect allows me to do things that a lot of people will never get to do. Especially satisfying is the notion of “thinking of something – and then having it built”. Here at Banwell, however, I’ve been doubly blessed! You see – my first love was hockey (growing up outside Boston in the era of Bobby Orr and the Big Bad Bruins will have that effect!). Here, for the first time, I’ve been afforded the opportunity to combine these two loves – with the charge of designing a hockey rink!
On my first day here at Banwell, Ingrid and Jules ventured down to New Hampton School with their presentation boards in an attempt to “land the job” – the design of a new rink for the school. As I sat here at my desk, I remember thinking “How GREAT would it be if A) we got the job, and B) I was given the opportunity to work on it?!?” I was like a kid in a candy store, itching with anticipation!
Turns out wishes DO come true! I sit here today, eight months later, looking at my first Hockey Rink design since I did my college thesis project (more years ago than I care to remember!) I like to think that I brought a little something to the table, with about 40 years of “on-the-job Hockey Training”, but more importantly, I like to think about how lucky I am – a job I love and the opportunity incorporate another life-long passion!
