Dondero Elementary School
Portsmouth Schools needed to update this 1970’s building to respond to current educational practices and renovate deteriorating infrastructure and finishes. Safety and handicap accessibility problems were also fixed as part of the solutions. The multiphase renovation was completed over two summers.
The project created a special education suite, a new computer lab adjacent to the renovated library, and provided a dedicated art room.
Structural modifications enabled a new corridor which eliminated using adjacent classrooms for primary access. A secure vestibule improves student safety. New finishes were provided throughout along with air sealing and all new mechanical systems for improved energy efficiency and lower utility costs while creating a more comfortable learning environment.
The result is an elementary school that will be prepared to educate Portsmouth students for decades to come with minimal cost impact.
