Keene HS Bathrooms

The traditional gang bathroom design, long utilized in buildings for decades, is no longer suitable for many populations. At Keene High School, these communal bathrooms have become a source of discomfort for students due to issues like bullying, drug use, and concerns related to gender identity. To address these challenges, Banwell collaborated with the client to develop an “open concept” bathroom design aimed at resolving these issues.

Unlike traditional bathrooms hidden away from public view, the new design integrates with the corridors, ensuring visibility and adult supervision through either physical presence or monitoring via cameras. The toilet stalls are outfitted with full floor-to-ceiling masonry walls and solid wood doors, offering ample privacy to users. Additionally, these stalls feature vape sensors and tamper-proof door hardware, while also being designed to be more accessible for people with disabilities.

Lastly, higher end plumbing fixtures were specified to ensure long term durability, ease of use for people with disabilities, easier cleaning and maintenance for the staff, and curb appeal.
